In LA recently, I asked the visitor centre people for a good place to take a picture of the Hollywood sign. This is the location where a lot of the media go to do on-camera interviews with the sign in the background (apparently)
Since I went there at night and the sign isn't illuminated (as I had thought) I only have a rubbish grainy picture to show for my efforts...
Weather and Seattle are enemies. You'd think this area could deal with the rain but it can't - everyone forgets how to drive (or rather becomes an even poorer driver than they already were.) You'd think this area would do more to control the tree population especially given the persistent rain, but it doesn't resulting in widespread damage and disruption to a significant portion of the population during the recent 2006 Wind Storm.
And then today it snowed around 4.30pm. It wasn't a huge amount of snow - about 3" where I live - but you'd think it were a blizzard. I live about 5.5 miles from work. It took me almost 3 hours to get home, which equates to about 1.8 mph. For comparison, the average walking speed is 3.4 mph according to the Road Engineering Journal, so almost twice as fast as I was able to drive. It gets worse: at least 45 minutes of that time was spent trying to get out of the parking garage that I was in, covering a distance of probably no more than 0.1 miles, equating to about 0.13 mph. Another 45 minutes were spent getting off campus and onto the main road, a distance of maybe 0.5 miles, so about 1.5 mph for that stretch.
Snowball fights and a family of snowmen that had been built by one of the pedestrian crossings provided some comic relief. The rest of the journey was completed at an average of 3.3 mph.
So, walking would have almost twice as fast (but a lot colder).
